X-Plosion Win Co-Ed Championship!

The Fall Co-Ed season wrapped up with a new champion. Being crowned.  X-Plosion overcame a 0-2 start to win 10 straight and take home GSL’s Fall Co-Ed Championship.

8 teams started the season all with hopes of raising the trophy but only X-Plosion was able to accomplish that feat.  They started the season off slow but were able to turn it around and dominant the rest of the season.  The finished the season 8-2 and the #` seed for the playoffs.  Right behind them was Misfits at 7-3 and defending champions Chronics at 6-4, followed by eforum elite, Top Notch, Icare and No Drops.

All teams played tough throughout the season and showed great improvement as the season wore on.  Eforum, Top Notch and Icare were the rookies of the leagues and each had impressive wins during the season.  But when it came down to the end the 3 most experienced teams were ranked 1, 2, and 3.

In the playoffs X-Plosion advanced to the championship with a win over Top Notch.  Top Notch earned a hard fought overtime win over eforum elite.  The next game faced the teams from last season’s championship game Misfits vs. Chronics.  A huge rivalry game as all of their games has been intense and down to the last minute.  This game would be no different.  The Chronics lead late in the game 21-12 but the Misfits were able to work their way down the field and score to make 21-18.  The Misfits would need 3 pts to tie.  They went for 3 pts and a desperation throw just missed a leaping receiver in the end zone.  Chronics would move on to face X-Plosion in the Championship.

Another hard fought and close game.  X-Plosion jumped on the score board 1st to lead 6-0.  Both teams battled back and forth but were unable to score and it stayed 6-0 at half.  X-Plosion scored again to make it 12-0 and seemed to be cruising until a Chronic defender intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD.  After the successful extra point attempt it was now 12-7.  Neither team could move the ball until just a little over 2 minutes were left and the Chronics started to move the ball.  A HUGE 4th down conversion on a QB scramble kept the drive going as they drove toward the winning score.  With only 10 seconds left and the ball at the 10yrd line and 4th and goal a great defensive sack sealed the victory for X-Plosion as the ball sailed in to a Chronics player arms in the end zone. But the sack occurred before the throw and X-Plosion had held on and won the game 12-7.

Legion of Doom wins Fall 8-Man Championship

Legion of Doom Fall 8-Man Champions

Georgia Sports Leagues Fall 8-Man Champs were crowned this past week.  Legion of Doom became the 3 straight different Champion when they defeated G-Force 13-12.  Legion of Doom was the #2 seed and defeated Pray for Rain to advance to the Championship.  G-Force the #4 seed defeated The Panthers and then upset #1 Blitz to earn their way to the Championship.

G-Force started their run by defeating #5 seed The Panthers 21-6 in a back and forth heated battle.  In the end G-Forces size and experience was just too much and they were able to hold off The Panthers and earn a shot at the #1 seed and defending Champions The Blitz.  G-Force played the defending Champs tough early on but was not able to take advantage of some late arrivals by the Blitz.  Both teams fought hard back and forth and at the end of regulation the game was tied 6-6.  In OT the Blitz had G-Force stopped on 4th and goal but a penalty gave G-Force new life and they were able to capitalize and score to take the lead 12-6.  The Blitz had 4 shots at the end zone but was not able score and G-Force found themselves in the Championship game.

Legion of Doom had a 1st round bye and awaited the winner of Pray for Rain and the Bench Warmers.  Last year The Bench Warmers upset Pray for Rain in the playoffs but this year would be a different story.  Bench Warmers started out quick and scored on a 60 yard run by their QB.  Pray for Rain answered back to tie the game 6-6 then went up 13-6 before half.  Bench Warmers stopped Pray for Rain on their 1st possession and was able to tie the game us at 13-13.  Both teams played strong defense in the 2nd half until Pray for Rain drove down to take the lead 19-13 late in the game.  The Bench Warmers were able to drive down and score quickly to tie the game at 19-19.  But Pray for Rain would not be denied this year and worked their magic and scored at the end of the game to win 25-19.

Legion of Doom then played Pray for Rain.  This one would be another great tight game.  Legion led 13-0 at half but Pray for Rain shut them out in the 2nd half.  They were able to score to make the game 13-7 and with 2 minutes left in the game Pray for Rain drove down inside the LOD 20 yard line and had 4 plays for the tie or win.  LOD defense stepped up and kept Pray for Rain out and won the game 13-7 to move on to face G-Force in the title game.

Congratulations to Legion of Doom GSL’s 2008 Fall 8-Man Champions.

Palmetto Bugs GSL Summer ‘A’ Champions

The Palmetto Bugs were once again are crowned GSL ‘A’ League Champions this past weekend.  Although they suffered their 1st defeat in 3 seasons during the regular season they ran the table in the playoffs for their 4th straight title.

11 teams competed in Georgia Sports Leagues ‘A’ Summer Flag Football League.  Palmetto Bugs finished the season 9-1 with their only loss to Area 41.  Area 41 a new team to GSL started the year off slow losing their first 2 games but then went on the win their next 8 straight.  Veteran GSL team Regulators had their best season to date also finishing at 8-2.  Three time league runner up Goin Deep struggled this year finishing the season 6-4 and taking an early exit in the playoffs.  Another new team to GSL Legion of Doom finished at 5-5 as they got used to the increased talent and style of play in the GSL.  Veterans Bench Warmers (5-5) and Blitz (3-7) had high and low moment during the regular season.  The final new team Team Elite struggled in their 1st season but show promise as they gained valuable experience playing in the ‘A’ league.

Palmetto Bugs started off by defeating the Blitz 20-6, then faced Legion of Doom.  They scored with 7 seconds left (20-13) to move on the championship game.  In the other half of the bracket, Atlanta Rat Pack started by defeating Team Elite 24-0 before losing to the Regulators 20-13.  BenchWarmer upset Area 41 24-13 before losing to the Regulators in the semi-finals 13-8.

In the Championship, Palmetto Bugs faced off against the Regulators.  Palmetto went to work quick jumping on top 14-0 in the 1st half and cruising to a 25-7 victory to win the Championship.  This was Palmetto Bugs 4 straight championship and the Regulators first time as runner up.

Titans GSL Summer “B” Champions

The Titans finished the Summer Season 13-0 and won the “B” Championship.  After completing the regular season 10-0 the Titans swept through the playoffs and defeated the Gunners 21-20 in overtime of the championship game.

12 teams competed in the Summer Season to for a chance to win the championship.  A single elimination tournament would decide the winner.  The biggest surprised of the playoffs were Weng Weng and P 4 L.  Weng Weng finished the season 4-6 and was seeded 7th in the playoffs.   They were able to put it all together by defeating #10 Maniacs(13-12), upsetting #2 P 4 L(26-20) before falling to the Gunners (13-0)  P 4 L the #2 seed had played strong all year and looked to reach their 1st championship game but ran into a “hot” Weng Weng team who defeated them.  On the other side of the bracket #1 seed Titans cruised into the championship game by defeating Supreme Clientele (26-0) and Indians (25-13).

The championship game featured the top seed Titans verses #3 Gunners.  The Gunners were a new team to the GSL but showed they would be a team to deal with all year long.  The Titans a veteran team with a fiery QB would have their hands full in this game.  It was a tight game from beginning to end as neither team could put the other away.  The Titans were able to drive down late in the game and tie the game up at 13-13.  The Gunners would try to score late but with time expired the Titans picked off the Hail Mary attempt and only a diving flag pull saved a TD on the return.  Overtime would be needed to decide our winner.  Gunners would win the toss and choose Defense 1st, so the Titans would start with the ball.  Two plays later the Titans were in the end zone and after the XP lead 21-13.  It only took 2 plays for the Gunners to get in the zone to make the score 21-20.  Not wanting to play for the tie the Gunners decide to go for the 2 point conversion and the win.  A low snap and overthrown pass in the back corner of the end zone seal the Championship for the Titans who win the game 21-20.  It was a great game that both teams deserved to win as both were worthy of being named Champions.

The Blitz’s only loss came to Pray for Rain in overtime on a rainy day no less.  But they went on to avenge that loss and dominate the regular season and playoffs.  They finished the season the #1 seed and defeated the Panthers and then BenchWarmers in the championship 13-6.

Then BenchWarmers came out of nowhere to make it to the Championship game.  They defeated Wolfpac 35-0, upset Pray for Rain 27-18 before losing to the Blitz.

Bench Warmers Win 'B' Championship

06/09/2008by Mark Nations

Bench Warmers win Henderson “B” Championship

The Bench Warmers who just a year and half ago were found playing “pick up” football have won their 1st Championship.

Back then they had never played in any organized league when they were invited to play in the GSL.  They took the challenge and played every chance they could.  They played league games, state tournaments against top teams in the state and open tournaments against the best teams in the southeast.  Never quitting never giving up and even taking on more competition in the 8-Man contact league.  All that work and experience paid off as they defeated #1 seed Range Rovers 19-13 in the championship game.

The Range Rovers had defeated them earlier in the season 19-0 but they were determined to win the “ship” and the “shirts”  The #1 seed Range Rovers Defeated Headliners and Bad News to earn a birth in the Championship game.  Bench Warmers defeated Atlanta Rat Pack and Weekend Warriors to earn their spot.

It was a hard fought season seeing several new teams grow and get better as the season went along.  10 teams competed in the Henderson “B” League and all battled to the end in hopes of winning the Championship.

This league was to help give new and old teams more experience and build confidence and all teams showed they will be more competitive in the seasons to come.

Co-Ed Champions Finally Crowned

05/05/2008by Mark Nations

Rain had plagued the final few weeks and playoffs of GSL's Co-Ed Flag Football Season.  The season was due to end 4 weeks early but the weekly Friday night/Saturday morning rain pushed everything back.

With a break in the weather the Final 4 teams took the field to battle for the Co-Ed Championship.  First game featured #1 Seed Chronics vs #4 Seed No Drops.  The Chronics proved why they were the #1 seed and cruised easily to a win.

The next game pitted #2 seed Misfits vs #3 seed and defending Champion Mean Machine.  The misfits were short handed and played with only 6 players but were able to do what they needed to do and win the game and a spot in the championship game 18-0.

League rivals met as #1 faced #2.  Chronics had won the season series by winning 2 out of 3 games.  But Misfits came in on a roll by winning there last meet up 22-6.  The Misfits take the early advantage of a mistake by the Chronics as a failed snap cost the Chronics a safety.  The Chronics were able to over come their early miscue and find a receiver deep for a long touchdown pass.  The find an open female in the endzone for the extra point and take the lead into half 8-2.  Both teams battled back and forth in the 2nd half but a late Chronic interception off a bobbled catch attempt give the Misfits a chance late in the game.  They are able to drive down the field and have 3 shots at the endzone including a DROPPED catch in the endzone.  The Chronics knock down the final attempt of the Misfits and secure the win 8-2.

Congratulations 2007 Winter Co-Ed Champions The Chronics.

Untouchables Spring Fling Tournament Champions

04/29/2008by Mark Nations
Untouchables prove to be just that.

9 Teams participated in Georgia Sports Leagues Spring Fling Flag Football Tournament.  Three of the Top 5 National teams including the 7-Man National Champions (Palmetto Bugs) and Runner ups (Quick Strike) fought through the Heat and Rain this past weekend.

After Saturday’s pool play the top three seeds were as expected.  Untouchables (LA) finished as the #1 seed, followed by Palmetto Bugs (SC) and Quick Strike (LA) all finished undefeated after pool play.  Local teams Slow Motion, Vandals, and Shaw Dawgs were the 4, 5, and 6th seed and all finished 1-1.  The biggest surprise was Tough Draw (February Frenzy Tournament Winner) went 0-2 followed by Area 41 and The Blitz.

Everyone woke up to the usual Weekend rain storms but it had stopped in time for the 1st game.  Area 41 and The Blitz faced off to see who would play The Untouchables.  Both teams fought hard and were evenly matched.  Area 41 scored early in the 2nd half to take a 14-13 lead.  Late in the 2nd half the Blitz apparently scored to take the lead but a penalty nullified the score and Area 41 was able to hold on for the win.

Area 41 then faced top seeded Untouchables.  The Untouchables outscored their opponents 119-0 yesterday and didn’t slow down as the won 40-0.

Vandals and Slow Motion squared off to and provided one to the better games of the tournament.  Both teams went back at forth and late in the game the Vandals scored to pull with in 2 pts.  They were unable to convert and Slow Motion took the win to advance to the Semi-Finals against The Untouchables.

The Untouchable have outscored their opponents 159-0 and looked to have an easy path to the Championship game.  Unfortunately no one told that to Slow Motion who ended up giving them their toughest game yet.  The Untouchables lead 14-7 at half and lead late in the game 21-13.  Slow Motion was not ready to quit and scored with 14 sec. left to pull with in 2 pts.  Showing they were they to win they decided to go for 3 pts and the win.  Pulling a play out of the Boise St. play book Slow Motion attempted the hook and ladder but was unable to find to end zone.  The Untouchables dodge a bullet and secure their spot in the Championship game.

Palmetto Bugs took the walk over verses Tough Draw and Quick Strike then faced Shaw Dawgs for the right to face the Bugs.  Shaw Dawgs tried to hang with Quick Strike and play ball control but in the end The Strike was just too good, they advance with the win.

In the 2nd Semi-Final old rivals met again as Palmetto Bugs battled Quick Strike...  These teams have battled several times over the last few tournaments including twice in the National Championships.  This game resembled most of the others as both teams battled, and fought all the way to the end.  Tied at half 13-13 Palmetto dodged a bullet when Quick Strike dropped an apparent TD pass late in the 2nd half.  Palmetto took advantage and intercepted the next pass and was able to drive down for the go ahead TD. With 2:00 min. left and down by 7 Quick Strike was able to drive down to the 2 yard line.   And on 4th down and the game on the line they pulled off an excellently diagramed play to score with 24 secs. left.  No willing to tie, they decided to go for 2 and the win, but it was not meant to happen and Palmetto held on 20-19 and move on to the Championship verses Untouchables.

In the Championship game The Untouchables continued their stellar defensive play as the held Palmetto scoreless and won 14-0.  For the tournament The Untouchables shut out 4 of the 5 teams they played and was the most dominant team all tournament.  Congratulations Untouchables, GSL’s 2008 Spring Fling Champions.

This marks the 4th different tournament winner in GSL’s tournament history.

GSL 8-Man Contact League starts this weekend

03/13/2008by Mark Nations

Georgia Sports League’s will start its 2nd season of Saturday 8-Man Contact this weekend.  We have 4 new teams to go with 2 returning teams from last year.

UPS, Try N’ Keep Up, Wolf Pac, and The Bench Warmers are all new to the 8-Man league.  They join runner up The Blitz and The Knights in the Saturday 8-Man League.  The Bench Warmers are coming in like The Blitz did last season as they have been playing 7-Man and are looking to compete in the 8-Man Contact.  The Blitz who were also a 7-Man team finished 2nd last season as they improved each week as they learned the game.

UPS, Try N’ Keep Up and The Wolf Pac are unknowns and will be interesting to see where the season goes as these teams compete for the Spring League Championship.  The Blitz would come in as the favorite with Defending Champion DSL not playing this season.  The Knights look to improve after their 1st season in the league and will be competitive each week.  With the addition of 4 new teams anything is possible.

Good luck to all the teams this season.

GSLs WInter Playoffs Begin Sunday

03/13/2008by Mark Nations

GSL’s Winter playoffs will begin this week with 24 teams competing to be Winter League Champions.  Defending Champion Palmetto Bugs look to win their 3rd straight league championship.  This season they will face stronger competition in ATL Express, Goin Deep, Range Rovers, Regulators, and Tough Draw.  GSL’s Flag Football league has gotten much deeper in talent and each season proves to be more and more competitive.

There will be some interesting early round match ups.  Playoffs this season pitted the top seeds from the East Division verses the lower seeds from the West Division.

 Game of the Week #1

ACCC verses Field Mob II looks to be an interesting match up.  Field Mob the GSU Intramural Champions started the season off strong but have struggled as of late.  On the other side you have ACCC who have improved each week and play very strong team ball.  The Mob has the athletes but has not played well together and ACCC has counted on solid team play and steady play from there QB to lead them each week.

 Game of the Week #2

X-Factor verses Xplosion should be Xciting.  Players from both sides know each other very well.  Xplosion was a mentor team to X-Factor when the season 1st began   They helped with players and coaching and kept their confidence up even after they lost their 1st 4 games including 44-0 against X-Plosion.  Since then X-Factor is 5-1 and has turned their season around and look to make a run in the playoffs.  X-Plosion is 2-3 in their last 5 with some tough losses.  It will be interesting to see how this game plays out and if X-Factor can avenge that 44-0 loss in week 2.

Good luck to all the Playoff teams.  Playoffs will continue on March 30th after the Easter Break.

February Frenzy Tournament Results

02/19/2008by Mark Nations

Tough Draw proves to be just that……

Congratulations to Tough Draw who won the February Frenzy Flag Football Tournament.  8 teams from 3 states competed in Georgia Sports Leagues most recent tournament.

All 8 teams competed in pool play prior to the single elimination tournament which decided the winner.  Tough Draw was the only team to go undefeated by winning over Palmetto Bugs, SC All-Stars, and the Vandals.  Going undefeated made Tough Draw the #1 seed in the single elimination tournament.

In the other pool we had a 3-way tie at the top.  Goin Deep, Mt. Carmel (MS), and Pfuzion all finished at 2-1 in pool play.  Pfuzion won the tie-breakers to claim the top spot in the pool and the overall #2 seed.

In Sunday’s single elimination play Palmetto Bugs faced off against Goin Deep and Mt. Carmel played SC All-Stars.  The Bugs and Goin Deep are very familiar with each other and the result stayed the same as Palmetto advanced to the Semi-Final game against Pfuzion.  Two of the out of state team faced off in the other opening game, with Mt Carmel taking advantage of 5 All-Star interceptions in securing the win.  Mt. Carmel would advance to play #1 seed Touch Draw.

Semi-Final #1 was the game of the day with Palmetto Bugs (2-time defending 7-Man National Champions) facing Pfuzion (Top 10 8-Man National Ranked team) 2 of the most athletic teams in the tournament battled back in forth  and were tied 19 -19 with under 5 minutes to play.  Pfuzion was able to drive down the field and score with just under 2 minutes to play.  With plenty of time Palmetto was unable to drive down the field and fell short 25-19.

Semi-Final #2 pits Mt. Carmel (MS) against Tough Draw.  Mt. Carmel had been playing almost short handed all tournament since they lost a player 4 plays in the very 1st game.  This injury forced their coach into action clad in tennis shoes and not expecting to play.  Tough Draw one of the most experienced teams in the tournament contained top players from Georgia, Florida, and New Orleans.  This combination proved too much as Tough Draw won out 26-6 to advance to the Championship.

Championship game had Pfuzion vs. Tough Draw.  Pfuzions extremely tough semi-final game took it out of them as they were never able to sustain any kind of momentum.  Tough Draws talent and experience once again lead them as they won the championship game 26-6.

Tough Draw ended up 5-0 in the tournament.  Tournament MVP’s were Offensive MVP Boobie (Tough Draw) and Defensive MVP Darren (Tough Draw)

Final Standings

Tough Draw 5-0

Pfuzion 3-2

Mt. Carmel 3-2

Palmetto Bugs 2-2

SC All-Stars 1-3

Bench Warmers 0-3

Vandals 0-3
